Streptomycin was first isolated on October 19, 1943, by Albert Schatz and Selman Abraham Waksman. Dr Waksman was awarded by a Nobel Prize in physiology and medicine for the discovery of streptomycin. The discovery of streptomycin and revealing its medicinal properties gave a powerful impetus in actinomycin research and other antibiotics. Streptomycin was the first antibiotic drug to have a positive effect in the treatment of tuberculosis.
