National Freedom Day in the USA

February 2020

National Freedom Day is celebrated in the USA on 1 February. On this day in 1865 President Abraham Lincoln signed a Congress resolution to introduce the 13th Amendment to the Constitution on the abolition of slavery. For the first time, National Freedom Day was celebrated on 1 February 1942, although it did not have an official status yet. It has been a tradition since then to lay a laurel wreath to the Liberty Bell, a symbol of independence and freedom in the country. President Harry Truman made the day an official holiday in 1948.
