World No Tobacco Day

May 2020

The global community had set the goal to eradicate tobacco use by the 21st century, but when the 21st century had arrived people still continued to smoke. The fight with nicotine is on. The day is designed to protect the current and future generations not only from smoking-related health harm, but also from social, environmental and economic problems.

The WHO and its partners observe this day and draw attention to the widespread prevalence of tobacco use and to negative health effects. They encourage governments to take action to curb this trend. Using tobacco is the most widespread preventable cause of death in the world today. According to WHO estimates, nearly 6 million people, or every tenth adult, die each year worldwide, including 600,000 of which are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke. By 2030 this number could rise to eight million unless we take action.
