Abu Dhabi Solar Record

The United Arab Emirates, the richest oil-producing region in the world, are paying increasing attention to alternative energy. In two years, the first stage of the world’s most powerful solar power plant will start operation in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. The total capacity is estimated to reach 200 GW. The UAE intend to become leaders in this field. By the opening of the Expo 2020 exhibition in Dubai, seven percent of the total electricity generated in the country will be generated by green technologies. This will reduce the burden on the atmosphere of carbon dioxide emissions equivalent to planting a million and a half trees. With a capacity of 200 GW, the UAE solar power plant surpasses by a hundredfold similar facilities already designed for Australia and Greece. In the next two years, several other stations will also start operating in the USA, India, the EU-funded Sahara Project and China. Yet, they will also be significantly inferior.

The construction of the new solar power plant is being carried out as part of the government program, the goal of which is to receive half of all the energy generated in the country from environmentally friendly renewable sources. The station will be completed in 2030 as part of the Solar Park, named after the UAE Prime Minister, Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
