In 1951 The Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded jointly to Sir John Douglas Cockcroft and Ernest Thomas Sinton Walton "for their pioneer work on the transmutation of atomic nuclei by artificially accelerated atomic particles". In 2006 The Cockcroft Institute was opened in the UK, where investigations in the field of accelerator science and technology are held.
