Esperanto is an artificial language devised in 1887 as an international medium of communication, based on roots from the chief European languages. It retains the structure of these languages and has the advantage of grammatical regularity and ease of pronunciation. The history of celebrating Esperanto on Zamenhof's birthday can be traced back to 17 December 1878, when at a birthday party for his 19th birthday he presented to his friends his Lingwe uniwersala, the first version of his international language. According to different estimates, there are between one thousand to several million Esperanto speakers. Esperanto was meant to serve as a universal international language, which any educated person would speak as a second language. Using this neutral and easy language could take intercultural communication to a new level.
