Estonian Independence Day

In 1918, the Salvation Committee proclaimed the country’s independence. This date is considered to be the date of the creation of the Estonian Republic.. Estonia received independence after the First World War and the Estonian War of Independence (1918—1920). In 1940, Estonia fell under the control of the Soviet Union following the Non-aggression Pact of between the USSR and Germany. National independence movement again gained popularity in the second half of the 1980s when people began celebrating Independence Day openly. The USSR recognized Estonian independence in 1991.
