International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers

29
May 2020

This date was established in order to praise the sacrifice and devotion of the peacekeepers around the world. It reflects the deeds that have been made by the UN in various countries for alleviating the suffering and reconciliation of warring parties. When the United Nations Security Council established the first peacekeeping mission in may 1948, few of the attendants could have imagined how the peacekeeping operations of the UN would change in future. The work of peacekeepers implies risk.

Today, on the International Day of Peacekeepers UN salutes more than 111,000 peacekeepers, and honors the memory of the deceased peacekeepers. During the history of UN peacekeepers more than 3,326 " blue berets " lost their lives for the sake of peace.
