Konrad Adenauer made a considerable contribution to the development of the post-war German state including its Constitution. Between 1951-1955, he also worked as Minister of Foreign Affairs. He was a very popular chancellor. Under his leadership, Germany experienced a revival becoming a significant and respected member of the world community. It signed diplomatic treaties with many countries including the USSR. In 1955, Germany joined NATO. Adenauer’s policies contributed to the fast economic development of the country that came to be known as the “German economic miracle”. His government’s policy encouraged militarism and revanchism. Having served for 14 years as Chancellor of a developed Western European country, Konrad Adenauer resigned due to his old age in 1963.
