World Refugee Day

20
June 2020

The UN General Assembly, on 4 December 2000, adopted resolution 55/76 where it noted that 2001 marked the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees, and that the Organization of African Unity (OAU) had agreed to have International Refugee Day coincide with Africa Refugee Day on 20 June. Africa, which has a lot of refugees, had always treated them with benevolence. 80% of all refugees in the world are women and children. On this day we pay tribute to the willpower of millions of mothers and wives who do their best to save their families in hardship. Currently, there are around 20 million refuges and 25 million internal and internally displaced persons worldwide. The international community consolidates its efforts to alleviate the hard lot of these people. The position of UN High Commissioner for Refugees created in 2001 is the central international agency tasked with refugee affairs.
